Where to stay in Venice: districts and surroundings

Venice splits into six districts (sestieri), and the choice matters a lot for both convenience and price. Here are the areas travellers pick most often:

• San Marco. The very heart of the city, with the basilica and St Mark's Square. Closest to the sights and the priciest. For those who want everything around the corner.
• Cannaregio. A quieter district near the station, with local bars and the old ghetto. Better prices and an authentic feel.
